Longest Books I’ve Ever Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

1. Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien: About 1178 pages. (This isn't the edition I read and I can't seem to find that copy.)

2. Inheritence by Christopher Paolini: 849 pages. I remember just. Powering through this one. It took me two days I think?

3. Winter by Marissa Meyer: 827 pages. This one never looks as long as it is because the paper is different, thinner than the other books in the series.

4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling: 800 pages. Every time I go through a reread, it hits me how long this is.

5. Brisingr by Christopher Paolini: 748 pages. My copy of this book is very battered from my reading of it.

6. City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare: 725 pages.

7. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare: 720 pages. These books just keep getting longer.

8. Eldest by Christopher Paolini: 704 pages.

9. Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare: 701 pages.

10. Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas: 693 pages. I'm far enough into this series that I'm sure I'll finish it, although it isn't necessarily one of my favourites, I'm invested enough.

  1. Seeing LOTS of HP on lists today. :) Also, one of the reasons I recently unhauled SJM's books (though I haven't read them) is because of the length. It's SO intimidating. But then I'm a reading wimp when it comes to book length.

    1. I don't actually have an Sarah J. Maas's books on my shelf, but I'm sure they take up a lot of space! (They're books I generally borrow from the library...) It's a long series and the books seem to keep getting longer.

  2. I think Harry Potter will be common this week. Rightly so too! :-) My TTT

  3. Lord of the Rings *nods* I have that one too. And I didn't realize the Eragon books were so big!

    1. I knew Inheritance and Brisingr were long but I wasn't expecting Eldest to make the list... I'm just looking at Inheritance now and remembering the days when Eragon was supposed to be a trilogy... in the end four books with pretty substantial page counts was barely enough for the story.

  4. I'm reading City of Heavenly Fire next week. When it came in the mail I was astonished by how big it is. But I can't seem to put down those books, so I'm glad it's long.

Empire of Storms is on my fall TBR, but with NaNoWriMo around the corner, we'll see if I get to it before winter or not. I may end up reading only ARCs and novellas that month.

    1. Eek you had to remind me about NaNo...

I personally was a little surprised that City of Heavenly Fire was the longest Shadowhunters book to date (I would have guessed either Lady Midnight or Lord of Shadows).

  5. Inheritance is on my list this week as well. It was such a good and sad ending to the series.

    1. I may still have a bone to pick with certain parts of the ending (all these years later) because I'm a very judgmental person, but overall I think it was relatively satisfying and bittersweet. I remember when we all thought it was going to be a trilogy (and didn't find out it wasn't... until finishing Brisingr and realising that wow the story is not yet over. That was An Experience.)

  6. Lord of Shadows has been on my shelf since its release. I am waiting until the last book is released, because I know the ending is one that leaves you wanting the next book immediately.

    1. Hmm... wise call on that one. I don't usually have the self control not to dig right into the next installment the moment I get my hands on it, so I've got to give you your props there.

  7. Great list! Yes, Lord of the Rings and Winter are very long books, but definitely worth it! I keep forgetting that some of the Harry Potter books are so long. I haven't read the Eragon series, but I'd like to. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

    1. My go-to advice with Eragon is that if you do give it a try and aren't a huge fan of the first book, give the second one a chance (the story gets more engaging after the first book, in my opinion). It's a not perfect series, but it's still a really enjoyable read! (Will it help if I promise someone fights giant snails by the end? Because that happens too...)

  8. Harry Potter made my list, too. I tried so many times to read Lord of the Rings when I was younger. I never made it through the whole thing.

    1. Understandable with Lord of the Rings! I read it over the course of quite a bit of time and I'm pretty sure there was at least one false start somewhere in there. (And a struggle with part of The Two Towers...) I haven't yet reread it, either. I think I kind of prefer The Silmarillion...

  9. Empire of Storms and Harry Potter both made my list too.

    1. They're both kind of doorstop-sized books, aren't they? (Wow sorry it took me so long to reply!)
