Ten Books I Picked Up On A Whim

Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly feature created at The Broke and The Bookish.

I'm going to go with some books that I actually purchased on a whim. I'm not generally an impulse-buyer, but sometimes, if something sound's interesting and it's on sale, I'll pick it up. (Mostly if something is $3.99 on Book Outlet.) Mostly because I have a hard time figuring out which books I have actually read and a) enjoyed or b) hated were the ones that I picked up on a whim. If that makes any sense.

1. Control by Lydia Kang: I heard about this one a really long time ago, I'm looking forward to picking it up.

2. A School for Unusual Girls by Kathleen Baldwin: Historical science girls are my jam. Basically any mention of that catches my interest.

3. Shutter by Courtney Alameda: Horror sounds fun.

4. Maid of Secrets by Jennifer McGowan: While it isn't historical science girls, it is historical ladies doing stuff, so I'm up for it.

5. Trial by Fire Josephine Angelini: I remember when this came out I considered reading it and just... didn't. I like the new cover a lot, so I grabbed the paperback off Book Outlet.

6. Valour and Vanity by Mary Robinette Kowal: I think I read Glamour and Glass a long time ago... this is more a commitment to eventually reading the series than anything else.

7. Forbidden by Kimberley Griffiths Little: Ugh, this was a mistake.

8. Compulsion by Martina Boone: This ended up being alright. I liked the gothic-y feel.

9. Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre: What a disaster. I quite liked Enclave, but this was disappointed by this one in the worst way. You can read more about why here.

10. In the After by Demitria Lunetta: This was an interesting read, I'm hoping to eventually pick up the sequel.

  1. I meant to put the book I own by Mary Robinette Kowal on my list this week too, and then forgot. *sigh* Anyway, I picked that one up on a whim although the comparison to Jane Austen (only with magic) probably "sold" it. Great variety (of genres) and list, Kelly. :)

    1. The concept of the series is quite interesting! It did end up to kind of be a mix of genres. I'm hoping I'll like the ones I haven't read yet.

  2. Ha-ha! I am not the only who buys books and wishes I hadn't wasted my money, huh? Your comments cracked me up.

    1. I aim to amused... At least it wasn't a huge amount of money, I got them both off of Book Outlet during a sale, so it wasn't too mad.

  3. I haven't read any books on your list this week! I do enjoy picking up books on a whim, but I don't often do that now!

    1. It isn't really a common occurrence for me either... typically only when they're on sale, and even then I had to go back about a year to complete this list.

  4. Oh I really enjoyed the Worldwalker series so far by Josephine Angelini and yes the covers are stunning! I have Forbidden and Compulsion on my TBR, sad to see one was a mistake and the other appeared only lack luster. My Top Ten

    1. I'm glad to hear that you liked the Worldwalker series. I've known people who loved both Forbidden and Compulsion, but neither of them worked for me... so your mileage with those may vary.

  5. Shutter was soooo good! I actually managed to get an ARC of it and adored it. The premise is awesome and there's plenty of gore and grit. ^-^

I've had my eye on Mortal Danger for a while now. It's a shame it didn't work out for you. =/

Lovely blog! I've followed via BL and Twitter. ^-^

    1. I'm really hoping I'll like Shutter, it sounds like it will be a really fast-paced read.

I really hoped that Mortal Danger would be great, but it REALLY didn't work out. I did love the look of the hardcover, though.

  6. You picked up some awesome books on a whim. I also picked Trial by Fire up on a whim, I was sent an unsolicited review copy, and ended up really enjoying it. I still haven't got to the sequel though so I need to hurry up and do that. Great list :) You can check out my post here.

    1. Thanks! I'm hoping to actually read Trial by Fire soon! I've seen it around, but haven't actually heard that much about it, so it should be an adventure...

    1. If they're gorgeous visually, it's probably because a lot of my whims are "the cover is pretty," Hopefully they'll be as great on the inside!

  8. I've only read 1 book from your list. But I really want to read pretty much every other book you have listed! I have a copy of Shutter and really need to read it. I hope you enjoy reading the ones you haven't read yet!
