Top Ten Books I Wish I'd Read As A Kid

Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly feature created at The Broke and The Bookish.

1. The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi: These were, of course, out when I was a child... they probably would have been right up my alley, if I'd known what my alley was.

2. The Nest by Kenneth Oppel: Granted this wasn't out when I was a kid, but I think it would have been fantastic to read when I was in the fifth or sixth grade.

3. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan: I read these when I was in high school. I think I would have liked them... I was fascinated by Ancient Greek and Ancient Egyptian mythology at the time.

4. The Search for WonderLa by Tony DiTerlizzi: I love Tony DiTerlizzi's art. It was something that drew me to Spiderwick in the first place, and my favourite part of this one.

5. The H.I.V.E. series by Mark Walden: Child and teenage criminal masterminds were something that I was drawn to as a child (not worrying at all, Kelly), and something that I still enjoy reading about now. I think part of it was that I really like heist stories and cleverness.

6. The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larson and Ben Gibson: Again, brilliant kids. Also there was something about how T.S.'s brain worked that I think would have made sense to me.

7. Ungifted by Gordan Korman: I think it's very valuable to see that there are different kinds of intelligence... especially because school systems seem to have a very weird and narrow description "gifted."

8. The Glass Sentence by S.E. Grove: It's such an interesting idea. I think it's an idea that I would have liked  as a kid.

  1. The Percy Jackson books are hyped a lot in the bookish circles I frequent, but I've not read them. Perhaps someday I will.

    1. They're fun. I think I would have liked them as a kid, but I still enjoyed reading them as a teen.

  2. I like DiTerlizzi's art too, and would have liked Spiderwick as a kid I think. I haven't read them but I kinda want to, with all the mysterious creatures. And I was big into mythology, probably would have eaten up the Percy Jackson books in middle school.

    1. Spiderwick is really fun! While I generally like Tony DiTerlizzi's work, I LOVE the illustrations he did for Spiderwick! It's beautiful, and I ended up buying the Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You for more of it.

  5. I want to get Spiderwicks for my daughter but she does not want me to get it for her.
I have read Percy Jackson books and I finished The Nest 2 days ago. MY daughter LOVED the Nest , she is 10 years old, so she wanted me to read it too and I liked it.
Now I want my daughter to read the Percy books because they are great! She refuses hahaha. But I found out that kids are just like adults when it comes to read, they will chose a book to read whenever they feel like it. I have the Harry Potter books that she made me buying them a long time ago and I always asked her to read them, but she refused to read them. she started last week reading them and now she is on the third book and she is loving them!
I am hoping that eventually she gets to the Percy Jackson books too.

    1. It sounds like she already has very definite opinions! I don't think there's any point trying to MAKE kids read anything- they either won't do it or won't like it because they're being made to read it. (I've done both in my time... school required reading and I butted heads when I was a child... and when I was a teenager, actually...)

That said, hopefully she eventually warms up to PJO and Spiderwick, they're both pretty great!

  6. Percy Jackson is one of my favourite series (I read them when I was 14) and I'm still reading Rick Riordan's books now (currently enjoying the first Trials of Apollo book). The HIVE series is awesome!

    1. While overall I'm not as amazed by Rick Riordan's later books as I was by the original Percy Jackson books, I was pleasantly surprised that I still enjoyed The Hidden Oracle when I read it!

HIVE is one of those series that I feel like of flies under the radar? Granted, I picked it up quite a while before I got into book blogging, but it was kind of on impulse, and haven't encountered that many people who've read it.

  7. I totally forgot about the Spiderwick Chronicles, I definitely wish I had read those as a kid too. And Percy Jackson for sure! I actually only read Harry Potter when I was 19 so I wish I had gotten the chance to grow up with those books as well.
